The discovery of the cell
The discovery of the cell did not occur until after the invention of the microscope, in 1590. In 1665, the English scientist Robert Hooke published the first description of cells when he examined several plant tissues under the microscope. Hooke saw units that repeated themselves when he examined a thin slice of cork, and called them 'cells' as they reminded him of the repetitive units of a honeycomb. [...]
